Agnes Marie Cardinal, 79, formerly of North Vernon, died Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at Franklin United Methodist Community.
Mrs. Cardinal was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Daughters of Isabella and Legion of Mary. She had served on the church's financial committee, school board, parish council and right-to-life committee and was a member of the Archbishop Annual Appeal. She also had been a eucharistic minister at the church.
She moved to Jennings County in 1958 and co-owned Just Rite Supermarket until 1990. She was a homemaker and enjoyed crafts, crocheting and gardening.
The funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Reverend Joseph Sheets officiating. Calling will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Vance-Fisher-Sawyer Funeral Chapel, and a prayer service will be conducted at 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be at St. Joseph's Cemetery at Four Corners.

Born in Jennings County March 16, 1925, Mrs. Cardinal was the daughter of Henry and Rose Megel Elsner. She married Paul R. Cardinal October 23, 1946.
Survivors include children, Mike Cardinal of Smyrna, Georgia, Paulette Alquist of Edward, California, and Pat, Greg, Kent and Jude Cardinal, all of North Vernon; sisters, Martha French Hinnefeld of Seymour and Helen Hauersperger of North Vernon; brothers, Carl Elsner of Houston, Paul Elsner of Greensburg and Oscar Elsner of North Vernon; 16 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on September 14, 1985; sisters, Irene and Stella Vogel; and brothers, Ambrose and Omer Elsner.
