Daniel Joseph Elsner

Born: November 21, 1965     Died: March 25, 1995

Two men are dead and three other persons are hospitalized as a result of a traffic accident on Indiana 3 just south of CR300S at 4:33 p.m. Saturday afternoon.   Dead are Daniel J. Elsner, 29, of Spencer Township and Ronald Dean Conley, 42, of Country Squire Lakes.

County coroner Harold Pickett reports Daniel Elsner and Conley died in the wreck from massive internal injuries.

Conley was alone in a 1995 Dodge mini van.   Elsner was a passenger in a 1993 full size Chevrolet pickup truck driven by his father, Oscar Elsner.

Oscar Elsner, 65, is listed in serious condition in the coronary care unit of University Hospital at Louisville, Kentucky, according to a hospital spokesperson mid-morning Monday.   He reportedly has head, chest and leg injuries.

James Elsner, 36, and his seven-year-old son, Zachary, remain in Methodist Hospital.   The public relations director at Methodist reported at 10 a.m. Monday, James is in critical condition in the neuro critical care unit.   He reportedly suffered head and other serious injuries. Zachary remains in serious condition.   He is a patient in the pediatric intensive care unit.   His injuries are to his head, abdomen and legs.

All the injured received emergency treatment at the Jennings Community Hospital and were transferred by helicopters to the out-of-town hospitals.

The Elsner family reportedly had been to an auction and an old two-row corn planter was in the bed of the truck.   The wreck took place on an incline, not too far from the break of the hill, about .2 of a mile south of CR300S.

After the near head-on impact, both vehicles went over a slight incline on the east side of the road.   According to Pickett, both vehicles were badly damaged.   'You wonder how anybody got out,' he said.

Other officers at the accident scene were Major Jerry Shepherd and reserve officers Brandi Robbins and John Willis.   Rescue 20 transported the victims and the Vernon Township Fire Department was also there.

These two are the first traffic fatalities of the year in Jennings County.

Funeral arrangements for Daniel Elsner are pending at the Dove-Sharp and Rudicel Funeral Home.

Mr. Elsner is survived by his wife, Marie, who is executive director of the Jennings County Chamber of Commerce; his parents, Oscar and Evelyn Elsner; a sister, Rose Rosenbalm of Brownsburg and four brothers, James Elsner and Andy Elsner of North Vernon, Steve Elsner of Houston, Texas, and Mark Elsner of Martinsville.
