Joseph Arthur Vogel

Born: May 6, 1922     Died: January 14, 1984

A rural Seymour man was killed Saturday when a snowmobile he was riding struck a pole in a barn on his property.

Joseph A. Vogel, 61, Seymour R1, died at about 5 p.m. Saturday.

Police said Vogel was on his way to a pond on his property to get water for his livestock.   He apparently went through a pole barn and hit a 8-inch by 8-inch support pole.

The snowmobile continued forward, sliding sideways.

Police said Vogel was thrown from the vehicle but had one foot resting on the snowmobile when it came to rest several feet beyond the pole.

Police said Vogel died of massive injuries to the right side of his head.

His body was discovered by his wife Northalena after she heard a noise "like an explosion".

Vogel retired from Cummins Engine Company in August 1983 and was a veteran and a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church.

Born May 6, 1922, in Brooklyn, Iowa, he was the son of the late Leo P. Vogel and Marie C. Claes Vogel, who lives in Leon, Iowa.   He lived most of his life in Jackson County.

He married Northalena Maschino on January 9, 1946, in Four Corners in Jennings County.   She survives.
