Jerry Dale Rumph

A one-car automobile accident on an icy country road Monday took the life of one Seymour man and seriously injured another.   Dead is Jerry D. Rumph, 23, Seymour R4.

The driver, William G. Everhart, 23, of 444 Vehslage Road, is listed in serious condition at Bartholomew County Hospital in Columbus.

The accident occurred at 4:43 p.m., 1.3 miles south of U.S. 50 on County Road 600E.

According to Trooper Tom Acton, Seymour State Police Post, the car was northbound on the slushy, blacktop road when the driver lost control and the vehicle slid approximately 85 feet, hitting a utility pole on the driver's door.

The investigating officer said the car "broke in half" when it wrapped itself around the pole.   Both driver and passenger were pinned inside the wreckage for 45 minutes.

Keith Burkholder, deputy coroner, ruled official cause of Rumph's death to be "severe brain damage due to depressed skull fracture".

Funeral services for Mr. Rumph will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Thursday from Burkholder Chapel with Monsignor Cornelius Sweeney officiating.   Burial will be in Reddington Cemetery.

Friends may call after 3 p.m. Wednesday at Burkholder Funeral Home.

Bible Wake services will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Burkholder Chapel.

Mr. Rumph was employed as a foreman at Cosco Products in Columbus.   He was active in the Seymour Men's Softball and Basketball leagues as well as both sports in Columbus.

Born February 25, 1956, in Seymour, he was the son of Irvin and Leona Fish Rumph, Seymour R1.

On January 31, 1976, in Seymour he was married to the former Lisa Ann Prewitt, who survives.

In addition to the parents and widow, survivors include a daughter, Jessica, at home, maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Sandhage, North Vernon R4; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Faye Prewitt, Seymour; two brothers, Larry Rumph, Seymour R4; and David Rumph, Seymour R1; and one sister, Mrs. Dennis (Linda K.) Rust, Seymour R5.
