Margaret Jean "Peggy" Stewart Jones

Born: June 19, 1928     Died: October 10, 2000

Peggy Jeanne Jones, 72, of Harrah died Tuesday October 10, 2000 at her home in Harrah.

Peggy Jeanne Stewart was the second child and the oldest daughter born to Claude and Helen Marie (Hauersperger) Stewart on June 19, 1928 in Rantoul, Illinois.   She met and dated a handsome young Tech Sergeant by the name of Paul Stephen Jones while he was stationed in Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, Illinois.   They were married on August 11, 1945 in Urbana, Illinois.   They came to Yakima Valley forty five years ago.   This marriage produced four daughters.

Peggy worked as the Clerk Treasurer for the Town of Harrah for a few years.   Later she worked as a secretary for the Mount Adams School District until she retired in 1980.   She enjoyed working with children and meeting people at the school.   She impressed upon her daughters and grandchildren the value of a college education.   Peggy loved her family, especially her grandchildren.   She was very proud of them and would break out in a smile whenever her young grandson, Wade and great grandchildren, Sattie, Tyra, Tanner and Tyson would come for a visit.

Peggy especially liked to fish at Horsethief Lake Park.   Rock hunting for Ellesburg Blues was one of her hobbies.   Going for rides through Bickleton and along the Columbia River allowed her the pleasure of seeing the lively little bluebirds and wildflowers she so enjoyed seeing.

She is survived by her husband, Paul; daughters, Nancy (Bill) Fiander, Janice (Frank) Whitefoot all of Harrah, Joyce (Ken) Bruemmer of Omak, Washington, and Barbara (Dr. Alan) Hatch of Oracle, Arizona.   Grandchildren, Stephanie (Tavis) Hull of White Swan, Aaron Whitefoot of Yakima, Lauir (Andy) Juarez of Kirkland, Washington, Lisa Whitefoot of Pullman, Washington, Nathen (Terre) Hatch of Tucson, Arizona.   Ameilia (Wyatt) Ramsay of Flagstaff, Arizona, Jon, Andrea, La Rena Gatlin, Mylinda, Sabrina Hatch of Tucson, Arizona and Symantha and A. J. Hatch of Oracle, Arizona; brothers and sisters: Don (Marta) Stewart of Savannah, Georgia, Doris Bullock of Shepherdsville, Kentucky, David (Carol) Stewart, of Helena, Montana, Victor (Gen) Stewart of Russellville, Arkansas, and Daniel (Felicia) Stewart of Conway, Arkansas.   She was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2000 in Saint Mary’s Catholic Church at White Swan.   A prayer service will be held at 8:00 p.m. on Thursday October 12, 2000 in Merritt Funeral Home Chapel.   Burial and concluding services will be in the Reservation Community Memorial Park West of Wapato.
