Death was attributed to a coronary attack, as Mr. Kain was believed to be recovering successfully from abdominal surgery which he had undergone Wednesday morning. He was in the recovery room at the time of death.
A veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict, Mr. Kain was born in this city May 1, 1926, the son of Otto and Lois Zirkle Kain, both of whom survive, and was a graduate of Shields High School.
He served with the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946, in the South Pacific, and later enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserves, serving on active duty at Bakalar Air Force Base and at Fort Benning, Georgia, during the Korean Conflict, until 1953.
On December 15, 1946, Mr. Kain was married to Miss Wanda Sterling, who survives.
An employee of Cummins Engine Company, Columbus, Mr. Kain was a member of the First Baptist Church of Columbus and was Scoutmaster of a Boy Scout troop of the church, with 75 boys. His son, Jon, became an Eagle Scout under his father's leadership.
Mr. Kain was also a member of the Elks' Lodge of Columbus, transferring there from the local Elks' lodge, and in youth was a member of the DeMolay chapter here.
Survivors, in addition to the widow and parents, include the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Lola Kain, of this city, and three children: Mrs. Jerry (Kathy Lynn) Carr, of Columbus; Miss Becky Jane Kain, a student at Indiana State University, Terre Haute; and Jon Michael Kain, a Columbus High School sophomore.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m. Saturday from the Reed Funeral Home, Columbus, with the Reverend Ralph Newell, pastor of the First Baptist Church in charge. Burial in Garland Brook Cemetery, Columbus.
