An Indianapolis fire rescue squad called when he became ill said he apparently had suffered a heart attack. He was visiting in the capital city with friends, accompanied by Ivan Bridgewater, of Seymour, and Harold Evans, of Evansville.
Mr. Speckner served three terms in the state legislature, from 1960 to 1966, as joint state representative from Jackson and Brown counties. He was elected on the Democratic ticket.
He formerly owned and operated Robert Speckner Chevrolet at Brownstown.
Currently he was special investigator for the Jackson County prosecutor's office and a manufacturer's representative for chemical supplies.
He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Seymour Lodge No. 472, Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, and Seymour American Legion Post No. 89. He had served as president of the Seymour Jaycees and was a former member of the Seymour Rotary Club.
He had given many hours of volunteer service in activities at the local Girls Club. Mrs. Speckner is president of the board of directors.
He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Seabees.
Born April 2, 1927, in Seymour, he was the son of Mrs. Mary Megel Speckner, of Seymour, and the late Andrew J. Speckner.
A lifelong resident of Seymour, he married the former Carol L. Brown, who survives, on April 28, 1950, in Seymour.
In addition to the mother and the widow, he is survived by three daughters, Cindy, Bethany and Aimee Speckner, all at home; two brothers, Edward L. Speckner, of Seymour, and Carl Eugene Speckner, of Reynoldsburg, Ohio; and two sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Kay) Stewart, of Seymour and Mrs. Robert (Annette) Wire of Indianapolis. One brother preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be conducted at 9 a.m. Saturday from St. Ambrose Catholic Church with burial in Riverview Cemetery.
Friends may call after 1 p.m. Friday at the Voss Mortuary. Rosary will be recited there at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Memorials will be accepted for the Seymour Girls Club and the Heart Fund.
