Sister Laura (Regina Clare) Megel

Born: October 25, 1907     Died: November 29, 1996

Sister Laura Regina Megel, died in the mid-afternoon on Friday, November 29, 1996, in the infirmary at the Convent of the Holy Spirit, Techny, Illinois.   Sister Laura had celebrated her 90th birthday about five weeks before her death and was in her 65th year of religious profession.

Sister Laura was born in North Vernon, the third child in a family of seven children (five sisters and one brother).   After graduating from Hayden Public Schools, she assisted her father, brother, and sisters at home for several years.   She joined the Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters in Techny on July 8, 1929.

Later she continued further studies in Techny, and then began her teaching career.   For 19 years she served in elementary schools in Jackson, Meridian and in Vicksburg, Mississippi, and then for three years in Little Rock, Arkansas.   Her teaching skills were again put to good use in Wisconsin and Pennsylvania.

In 1956 Sister Laura was missioned to St. Ann’s Home, Techny, where she served in the dietary and in the activity departments until 1983.

She then came to the Convent of the Holy Spirit in Techny where she continued her activity programs with the sisters for some time.   In recent years she had been retired living in Maria Hall infirmary at the Convent of the Holy Spirit where she died.

Surviving are her brother, John Megel of North Vernon; two sisters, Mary Kohls of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Victoria Winter of Dayton, Ohio; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A Wake for Sister Laura was held at the Convent of the Holy Spirit Monday, December 2nd.   The funeral Mass of Resurrection was celebrated on Tuesday, December 3rd, at the convent.   Burial was at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Techny, immediately following the Funeral Liturgy.
