Theodore J. "Ted" Henkle, 79, Seymour, died at 6:50 a.m. Tuesday, September 10, 2002, at Memorial Hospital after being in failing health for two years.
Mr. Henkle was a veteran of the U.S. Army who served in World War II. He was retired from Seymour Manufacturing and was former owner and operator of Tipton Inn in Seymour. He also formerly worked for the U.S. Postal Service and was a self-employed truck driver. He was a member of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Seymour. He was a member of Knights of Columbus, third and fourth degree, and Veterans of Foreign Wars 1925 and American Legion 89, both of Seymour, as well as Club 55 Bowling League. As part of the 3031st OBER he was the recipient of the American Theatre Ribbon, AFT Ribbon, Good Conduct Ribbon and Victory Ribbon. He also was active with the Aging and Community Service of Jackson County.
Born August 29, 1923 in Centerville, Iowa, he was the son of Jess and Mabel Freeborn Henkle, who both preceded him in death. He moved to the county in 1946 and also married his wife, Loretta Maschino, in 1946 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. She survives in Seymour.
He also is survived by three sons, Dan (Jane) Henkle, Seymour, Tim (Rhonda) Henkle, Carmel, and Rob (Vikki) Henkle, Indianapolis; three daughters, Karen (Jim) Wilson, Ohio, Jane (Rick) Peters, Indianapolis, and Deb (Jeff) Miller, Franklin; 21 grandchildren, Katie, Kim, Kelly, DJ, Teddy and Tyler Henkle, Kristen Henkle (Patrick) Riecke, Sara and Laura Wilson, Andy, Ryan and Jeff Peters, Ryan, Amber, Jennifer and Aaron Henkle, Todd, Adam and Jessica Miller, and Conner and Peyton Henkle; and a great-grandchild Jayden Walls.
He was preceded by two sons, James and Joseph Henkle, two brothers, Delbert and Jack Henkle, a sister, Eva Horde and a grandchild, Kyle Henkle.
The Reverend John Hall will conduct funeral services at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Ambrose Catholic Church with burial in St. Ambrose Catholic Cemetery, Seymour. A rosary service will take place at 8 p.m. Thursday at Voss and Sons Funeral Service, Voss Chapel, Seymour. Full military graveside rites will be given by VFW Post 1925, American Legion Post 89, Disabled Veterans 47 and Vietnam Veterans 7, all of Seymour.
Friends may call from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and from 9 a.m. until time of the service Friday at the church.
Memorials may be made to Mass/Heart Fund or American Diabetes Foundation.
